The SimplyNano education project
The SimplyNano educational project was launched by the SimplyScience Foundation in 2011. The learning media were developed by Innovationsgesellschaft, St.Gallen. SimplyNano is the first experimental learning medium on nanotechnology for secondary levels l and ll. Exciting experiments and research-based learning are designed to get young people interested in technical professions in order to promote the next generation of skilled workers.
The learning medium includes the SimplyNano 1 and 2 experimental kits, teaching and learning materials, and continuing education courses for teachers, and is based on Curriculum 21. The continuing education courses for teachers are mainly held in companies to enable the exchange between trainers and teachers. Here, teachers have the opportunity to carry out the experiments themselves, to get to know the learning medium and to network with teaching companies.
SimplyNano is already being used successfully at many Swiss schools. Since 2012, over a thousand teachers have been trained to use the learning medium. SimplyNano is to be available to all secondary schools in German-speaking Switzerland by 2025.
The project is financed by the cantons, foundations, associations and companies.

In the fall of 2022, the SimplyNano 2 project started in the cantons of Basel-Landschaft, Basel-Stadt and Solothurn. All secondary schools in these three cantons were equipped with class sets totaling 880 SimplyNano 2 cases. A total of 64 schools were equipped and 121 teachers were trained in 8 professional development courses. The project was supported by over 39 partners from Northwestern Switzerland. The SimplyNano 2 project in the canton of Zurich started in September 2021 with a media conference. By June 2022, 130 secondary schools had been equipped with around 1,100 SimplyNano 2 cases. The first cross-canton SimplyNano 2 project was implemented in the three eastern Swiss cantons of St. Gallen, Appenzell Innerrhoden and Appenzell Ausserrhoden. Starting in spring 2020, the SimplyNano was implemented as a sub-project of the IT education offensive. All upper secondary schools in the three cantons have received a contingent of experimental kits. In parallel, a total of eight training courses were held. The first SimplyNano 2 project in Switzerland was successfully completed in 2018 in the canton of Aargau. Within the framework of the project, all upper secondary schools in the canton received a total of 550 experimental kits. Teachers from over 50 schools in Aargau participated in eight professional development courses. The courses took place in schools and at companies throughout the canton of Aargau.
