VERWO AG in Reichenburg hosted the third SimplyNano training course in the canton of Schwyz. Secondary teachers received an introduction to the SimplyNano 2 learning media and were able to try out the experiments contained in the experiment kit on their own. In VERWO AG’s modern apprentice workshop, the participants also learned many exciting things about the various apprenticeships offered by the Reichenburg-based industrial company.
200 experimental kits for Schwyz secondary schools
The SimplyNano 2 project provides 200 free SimplyNano 2 experiment kits for all secondary schools in the canton of Schwyz. This allows learners to experience nanotechnology firsthand and deepen their understanding of the applications of this technology. Fascinating effects from the world of nanotechnology are brought to life with hands-on experiments. Accompanying experimental courses for teachers are held at companies. In the process, the teachers receive theoretical input and additionally important information about apprenticeships and training opportunities in the companies. The project thus creates a “bridge” between schools and professional practice.
Diverse world of sheet metal processing at VERWO
During their visit, the teachers first gained an insight into the diverse world of sheet metal processing at VERWO AG. 3D laser cutting, robotic welding or coating are just a few of numerous modern manufacturing processes. VERWO AG offers complete sheet metal solutions from a single source for a wide range of customers. Among others for the Swiss Post, VERWO AG produced thousands of yellow mailboxes a few years ago. In order to prevent shortages of young talent, the Reichenburg-based company relies heavily on apprentice training. In the coming year, 20 new apprentices will be trained at the “VERWO Stifti”, among others as plant and apparatus engineers, production and polymechanics, logistics specialists or design engineers. “Thanks to the high quality of training and the state-of-the-art training workshop, our apprentices are exempt from the “ÜK” (inter-company course),” reported the deputy head of vocational training, Sandro Fornoni. During the subsequent tour of the “VERWO Stifti”, the teachers were able to get a comprehensive picture of the modern variety of facilities.
Enthusiastic teachers
In the main part of the course, the teachers received an introduction to the possible uses of the SimplyNano 2 experimental kit. They had the opportunity to experiment on their own and take a closer look at the materials in the case. Among other things, experiments were carried out with “superabsorbents”. The powdery, absorbent material is found in baby diapers and ensures that babies stay dry. The functioning of a smoke detector, the adhesion to gecko pads or the air cushion-forming plant “Salvinia molesta” were also investigated with enthusiasm. “It was great that we were able to run through the experiments 1:1 and thus gain a deeper insight” or “a lot of interesting experiments” were feedbacks from the teachers. They plan to use the experimental kit in about 6-10 lessons on average.
Successful conclusion in the canton of Schwyz
The SimplyNano project is a nationwide educational project that is already running in ten cantons. It is to be rolled out in all secondary schools across Switzerland by the end of 2025. With this third training course at VERWO AG, the introduction in the canton of Schwyz was successfully completed. After the course, the teachers were each able to receive a class set of SimplyNano 2 experiment kits for their school. The project is free of charge for the schools and is funded by the Asuera and Chorafas Foundations.
