A sweet project launch of “SimplyNano 2” in the canton of Bern at Schweizer Zucker AG

The first “SimplyNano 2” training course in the canton of Berne took place in Aarberg at Schweizer Zucker AG, where interested high school teachers from the region were given an introduction to the world of nanotechnology with the “SimplyNano 2” learning materials and practice-oriented experiments. All participating schools were delighted to receive a class set of the experiment kits, which can be used directly in the classroom.

Experimenting in the nano range

A central component of the course was trying out the nano experiments for themselves. The teachers carried out the experiments themselves and were able to directly experience how exciting nanotechnology can be used in the classroom. The variety of items generated great enthusiasm.

The experiment with memory metal (Nitinol) was particularly impressive: It was shown that this material returns to its original shape after being deformed. This principle is also used for dental braces or stents. The experiments with aerogel were also astonishing. Thanks to its special nanostructure, this material repels liquids so that even sticky honey, for example, simply rolls off.

A guest at Schweizer Zucker AG

Schweizer Zucker AG presented its company as the largest sugar producer in Switzerland and as a training company. The site in Aarberg processes up to 10,000 tons of sugar beet every day during the peak season. Around 15-18% of this can be processed into sugar. The remaining components are used for other products or for energy production. This means that 100% of the sugar beet is utilized.

As a training company, Schweizer Zucker AG in Aarberg trains apprentices for five different professions. Schweizer Zucker AG currently employs 25 apprentices throughout Switzerland. The apprentices benefit from a wide range of activities in various areas and are professionally introduced to the world of work.

Bern becomes the 18th “SimplyNano 2” canton

Thanks to the broad support of foundations, companies and service clubs from the region, around 660 “SimplyNano 2” sets, including training courses and accompanying material, can be distributed to schools in Bern. The canton of Bern is the 18th canton in German-speaking Switzerland to use the learning medium. The upper secondary schools in Bern are thus benefiting from interesting and practical learning materials in the STEM subjects.
